Light technology is rapidly advancing to offer us not only better everyday lighting but also ways to improve our health and well-being. Here is some essential consumer information about four types of light-based wellness gadgets that may improve your life. What was once developed for NASA astronauts has now found a mainstream home in the form of pain relief. Handheld light-emitting diode (LED) devices now are approved by the FDA for home use. LEDs are electronic components that produce light. You simply take the device and put it on the affected area, which also includes regions of muscle pain, tension, and spasms. The colored and infrared LEDs beam photons into the affected inflamed or damaged cells, which triggers a natural response for reduced swelling, increased circulation, and improved mobility. In the end, your cell does all the work after the device prompts it to initiate a reaction – a wonderful, natural healing effect. Also, consumers should know that infrared is different than UV (no UV rays are emitted); infrared is at the opposite end of the spectrum and is not known to have cancer-causing properties. Light Force was featured in Newsweek, the New York Times, The Denver Post and on PBS among many others Background and Articles NASA has been one of the earlier researchers on light-emitting diodes, proving their healing properties at near infrared wavelengths of 680, 730, and 880 mm in laboratory animals. The NASA light-emitting diodes are light in weight and mobile enough to have been utilized in space shuttle missions. The military has used LED devices to accelerate wound healing in the field and to mitigate muscle atrophy for inactive sailors on submarine duty, as they promote muscle regeneration. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved LEDs for therapeutic human trials and deem them as being a non significant risk.Light emitting diodes can deliver a concentrated dose of light energy to the tissues, with the most common wavelength used being red and infrared. LEDs usually incorporate multiple diodes that deliver light energy in a diffuse pattern over a wide area. It can penetrate human tissue to about 23 cm (9 inches) and can deliver more energy than a laser. Scientific evidence suggests it is the wavelength used, not whether it is coherent (Laser) that accounts for tissue effects. If so, scientists are beginning to discover that LED energy, which is safer than lasers, can replace laser therapies that have been so helpful but have side effects and are much more costly. Many health problems have successfully responded to LED therapy. It was first used on animals, and horse studies found it reduced heat and swelling in injured tendons and ligaments, providing pain relief. When whole body treatments were performed on horses, there was a dramatic enhancement of pain relief. Chronic back pain was eliminated in 10 of 14 horses, which lasted more than one year after treatment. LED therapy has been very effective on horses when applied to certain acupuncture points and meridians, referred to a “colorpuncture.”.LED therapy has also been very effective in humans, with a variety of ailments responding successfully to treatment. Some human conditions that have improved with LED therapy include:1. Reduction in inflammation and swelling 2. Alleviation in inflammation and swelling 3. Benefiting vertebrae and muscle problems of the back 4. Alleviating muscle pain 5. Blue light has destroyed acitinic keratosis (pre-cancerous skin growths) 6. Blue light has put acne into remission in 80 percent of subjects by attacking bacteria 7. Relieving pain in 88 percent of patients with tendonitis, capsulitis, and myofascial pain 8. The U.S. Army has been using LEDs in cancer research 9. Successfully treated difficult wounds in diabetic patients 10. Relieving pain in fractures and bursitis 11. Prevention of oral mucositis, ulceration, and pain to bone marros transplant patients undergoing chemotherapy 12. Enhancing wound healing, especially non-healing wounds 13. Healing skin conditions 200 percent faster with red light 14. Reducing chronic pain 15. Reducing chronic inflammation 16. Fast-growing brain tumors responded to longer wavelength therapy (728nm-680nm) Friday, February 6, 2004 May the light force be with you Denver Business Journal - by John Aguilar Special to the Business Journal This could be the breakthrough year for Light Force Therapy Inc. For three years, the company has quietly been selling its light therapy units to customers, who use the technology to help alleviate arthritis, bursitis and other pains and spasms in their muscles and joints.Just over a year ago, Light Force Therapy stepped up its direct-marketing campaign by hawking its products in television infomercials and on the Home Shopping Network. Last year, it generated $4 million in revenues, the company claims. This year, it estimates it will have revenues of $20 million, a fivefold increase in just one year."You'll see light therapy growing greatly in the next three to five years," said Kim Peterson, president and co-founder with her husband, Doug, of the Elizabeth-based company. She plans on expanding her company into the health and beauty industry, as well as the relaxation fields, with several new product offerings.Light therapy is predicated on the idea that both visible and invisible wavelengths of light can ease pain and promote healing. Typically, a user applies to their body a device equipped with light-emitting diodes, which are the same kind of light arrays found in modern traffic lights. Studies have shown that the skin and underlying tissue absorb the light, which promotes blood flow and oxygen to the affected area, reducing pain and inflammation. It's difficult to tell whether Peterson's rosy sales predictions are just company hype because Light Force Therapy is a private enterprise. But for Valerie Brinkworth, there's no need to crack open the company's books to know the technology works. After the Elbert County resident broke her ankle 10 years ago, she decided to use one of Light Force Therapy's devices to treat the residual pain. She was so impressed with the therapy that she ended up convincing about 70 friends and acquaintances to get units for their own aches and pains."When I used the device, I didn't feel anything except that the pain just ebbed out," said Brinkworth, 58, who regularly abuses her body on her motorcycle and horse. "Adventure junkies need this."While praise for the technology is good news for Light Force Therapy, it also means competition is thick. Tampa, Fla.-based Anodyne Therapy LLC has been in the game since 1994, four years before Peterson got her start."I wouldn't consider Anodyne a direct competitor because they specialize in the medical community, not in the consumer market," Peterson said. But Light Force Therapy faces a direct challenge from Omnilight Inc., which came out of the near demise of Bioscan Inc. New Mexico-based Omnilight sells light therapy devices right into Light Force Therapy's target market -- consumers --, which Peterson says, accounts for 99 percent of her company's sales."We've chosen to include a broad selection of wavelengths in each of our units that are good at addressing various conditions," she said. "We are very focused on developing products that are safe and easy for the layperson to use."Ironically, the first patients to receive light therapy treatments weren't laypersons at all -- in fact they weren't even human. They were horses. Eventually, someone got curious enough to see if the veterinary technology worked on people. After years of clinical research, the Food and Drug Administration gave its blessing to light therapy as a treatment for certain human ailments.Light Force Therapy, which purchased its light therapy technology in 1998 from another party, won FDA approval for human use of its devices in the fall of 2000. Its original equine units remain popular with veterinarians. The company's product line includes a $99 battery-operated portable unit called Dio, which will be replaced in March with the PocketDoc. Light Force Therapy's most popular model, though, is the LFT-9000, which looks like a small, plastic iron decorated with 48 diodes on its underbelly that flash and shine red and green lights. The $199 LFT-9000 has a dial that can be turned to several settings, like "improved circulation," "dull ache" and "persistent pain." It also comes with a strap for hands-free operation. The company says it has sold nearly 30,000 of the units since they debuted a year ago. Karen Cochran, 58, turned to Light Force Therapy after everything she tried for her migraine headaches failed to work. "I've tried doctors, chiropractors, osteopaths, Tylenol and Demerol," the Elizabeth resident said. "Then I did some light therapy treatment. About 15 minutes later, I didn't have a headache at all."It doesn't hurt, of course, to have the medical community behind you, even if your target market is the consumer market. To that end, Light Force Therapy makes more robust models for use in professional medical settings. >>>>>>>>>>> --> Payment to be received within 7 days of auction end.
