While these flat-rate boxes cost $38.95 USD for worldwide shipping and on average can save up to $20.80 USD on shipping costs (assuming a product weight of 5kg per box) versus the cost of five flat-rate envelopes at $11.95 USD each, using flat-rate boxes to reduce your shipping costs for multiple items can significantly increase the duties and/or VAT taxes that you might otherwise not have been required to pay. Flat-rate boxes may reduce your shipping costs, but because of the likelihood of increased customs duties I do not recommend the use of flat-rate boxes for international shipments with the exceptions of combined shipments to Australia and Canada. Australia is the only country I know that has established an exclusion of $1000 AUD per year for the personal importation of goods through the postal mail. For combined shipments to Canada the shipping savings for using the flat-rate boxes can be huge and relative to the increased duties paid for those boxes there will likley be a net savings with using the boxes even after paying increased duties for the boxes.International customs duties and delcaration: With more than 1000 packages shipped to Canada, and more than 4000 packages shipped worldwide I have over the years come to a working familiarity and understanding of international customs issues for many countries. For all international shipments I always declare my products values at their China wholesale value. This value is sometimes significantly less than your actual purchase price and is usually less than about $18 USD per item. By shipping internationally in USPS flat-rate envelopes and with a declared value of less than $18.00 USD per package there are very few countries that would impose customs duties for you to receive clearance and delivery of your package. In most cases the $18.00 USD or less declared value is less than the threshold that would trigger the imposition of customs duties. However, I cannot guarantee that you will not be required to pay customs duties, but I can tell you that from my experience less than 5% of my international shipments with no more than two products inclosed (in the same flat-rate envelope) have duties imposed. Please also understand that declaring products as gifts and with no value will usually not help to lower your customs duties. In fact, declaring my products as gifts with no value would almost certainly result in customs delays while your customs inspectors attempted to estimate the value of the enclosed product(s).
